On the bus heading to the Paul Short Invitational in Bethelehem, Pennsylvania... Spent the first couple hours playing catch-phrase, but things seem to have settled down now... I usually try to find some kind of song to capture the history or mood of whatever place we are going to, as a kind of reminder of how cool it is that we get to travel around the country (or at least the Northeast, where I haven't spend a lot of time). When we head to Boston I'll listen to Dirty Water by The Standells. For New York, of course, New York State of Mind by Billy Joel. And now to Bethlehem, which is actually the subject of Billy Joel's Allentown. The song was originally named "Levittown" after Billy Joel's hometown, but was written about the end of the industrial age in Bethlehem, PA, and the the decline of the steel industry in the Lehigh valley. Allentown never actually had a steel factory, but nothing rhymes with Bethlehem, so Joel named the song "Allentown" instead.
Paul Short will be the biggest collegiate invitational I've ever competed in, with 45 teams in the "Gold" race alone, including all 8 teams in our conference. Fast course... great competition... should be a great opportunity to make some noise and show what we're capable of. Definitely looking to go sub-25:00, or as my dad's high-school coach would say, "24:59.9 or better."
